Summary

Another fantastic historical fiction from O'Farrell。 I was transported to Renaissance Italy, all the grandeur and intrigue。 This is a fantastic book loosely based on real people and the lives they lived and the mystery surrounding the death of Lucrezia de'Medici。 I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it if you enjoy historical fiction。 It has made me want to go back to Italy so badly!

Very well written and imaginative story, but got a little to rapey and violent。 Not sure that violence towards women is such a good plot line。 That made me wonder why it is in Reese's bookclub。 I'll have to look into that。 Very well written and imaginative story, but got a little to rapey and violent。 Not sure that violence towards women is such a good plot line。 That made me wonder why it is in Reese's bookclub。 I'll have to look into that。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 The descriptions were sumptuous and the characters impelling。

Another good book by Maggie O‘Farrell。 It took a while for the book to become more enticing but when it did, it was excellent。 Life in the 16th century was not easy for women but this book highlights the brutality women of privilege faced。 Her strong character, cleverness and courage helped her survive what could have been a tragic end!! Hail the brave, courageous women that are often forgotten。 More books like this please。

Really 3。5。 While it was well-written and very well researched, I found the pacing a little slow。 The beginning was captivating and the final 30% more intense, but in between I found myself less interested。

I really wanted to like this but it was just too overwritten。

I was determined to finish and find out the ending! It’s a great historical fiction read, the author is an incredible story teller, but there was something lacking to me that I can’t quite pinpoint without spoiling the book for others。 I liked this one!

Jenny Nash

Not quite as good as Hamnet but worth the read nonetheless。

A just 4 stars for me。 HF is just that。。。 historical accuracy combined with fictionalized elements。 Couldn't be truer in this book。 The artist Il Bastianino, who was supposed to have painted the marriage portrait。。painted much in Ferrara but I could find no reference to a portrait of Lurezia anywhere by him。The Duke Alfonso 11。。。was an odious character and Lurezia part woman part child。。。leaping from childish ways to profound wisdom, of course she was only 16 when she died。。。this is not a spoile A just 4 stars for me。 HF is just that。。。 historical accuracy combined with fictionalized elements。 Couldn't be truer in this book。 The artist Il Bastianino, who was supposed to have painted the marriage portrait。。painted much in Ferrara but I could find no reference to a portrait of Lurezia anywhere by him。The Duke Alfonso 11。。。was an odious character and Lurezia part woman part child。。。leaping from childish ways to profound wisdom, of course she was only 16 when she died。。。this is not a spoiler!!To many flowery expressions and euphemisms bored me a little and the ending was far fetched but likeable and sad IMHO。All in all。。。。an interesting read and recomendable。 I would definitely read the author's afterword。 。。。more

Lucrezia de Medici or Lucré as she is called by her mother Eleanora, La fecundissima is the third daughter and awkwardly spaced middle child of the grand duch of Tuscany。 She is willful and independent much to her mothers dismay。 When her older sister Maria suddenly passes from a fever, Lucrezia is married to her fiancé in her stead, Alfonso II duch of Ferrara although she has barely just gone through puberty。 At fifteen she is sent to Ferrara as a duchess with one maid, little knowledge of the Lucrezia de Medici or Lucré as she is called by her mother Eleanora, La fecundissima is the third daughter and awkwardly spaced middle child of the grand duch of Tuscany。 She is willful and independent much to her mothers dismay。 When her older sister Maria suddenly passes from a fever, Lucrezia is married to her fiancé in her stead, Alfonso II duch of Ferrara although she has barely just gone through puberty。 At fifteen she is sent to Ferrara as a duchess with one maid, little knowledge of the language, and overall completely unprepared。 The good natured Lucrezia must quickly learn how to be a wife, duchess, and member of the ferrarese court very quickly。 This book was absolutely spectacular。 All around excellent。 Very well written like poetry just so so beautiful。 Lucrezia’s story was so interesting and she was so endearing。 I absolutely loved it and am going to impulse by everything else by this author。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Not sure what happened here。This is my first Maggie O'Farrell so maybe there was a huge deal of expectation。 I found the book dull and plodding。 Since we were told upfront what history has to say about Lucretzia, I spent the first two thirds of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop and so all the text felt like filler。 Once the clues started showing up I could spot the ending a mile off which made it very procedural。I am also hating waif-like heroines at the moment。 These women may be disa Not sure what happened here。This is my first Maggie O'Farrell so maybe there was a huge deal of expectation。 I found the book dull and plodding。 Since we were told upfront what history has to say about Lucretzia, I spent the first two thirds of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop and so all the text felt like filler。 Once the clues started showing up I could spot the ending a mile off which made it very procedural。I am also hating waif-like heroines at the moment。 These women may be disadvantaged by their gender but why the pre-raphaelite shtick? Lucretzia is a young women desperate for knowledge and bursting with creativity yet she is wasting away before she even leaves Florence。Also, why no tears shed for Emilie who was being so blatantly set-up by the author as a sacrifice? Why was her life less important than Lucretzia's。 I understand that many of the themes were about the lack of control that women had over their own bodies (and not only women) and how their only value was as walking wombs but this somehow felt very wrong。Any writing that wasn't plot was very engaging。 Scene setting and world building was fabulous。 If this book hadn't been on the Women's Prize long-list I would not have bothered finishing it。 。。。more

If you are on the fence about reading this as I was, just read it! I loved this beautifully written book。 O’Farrell weaves together a fascinating tale of royal intrigue in the 1500s and brings it alive for today’s readers。

A great story and a twist for an ending should have made this a 4-5 star read。 However, the lengthy, page-long, excessively detailed descriptions (of how well one slept or the color of。。。well anything) bogged this book down。 I found myself skimming over these long paragraphs during the second half of the book。 I am glad I saw it through because the ending was worth it。

Author Maggie O’Farrell knows A LOT of words, and clearly tried hard to fit all of them into the story。 Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for me- Lucrezia is an uninteresting character with a meandering voice, completely buried in an overdescribed narrative and smothered by adjectives。

Sue

Different for me。 Out of my box genre。 I love the sneakiness of Lucrezia。 Strong minded woman! A fighter。

I really enjoyed this book, in particular the writing style。 It was almost stream-of-consciousness at times, or like the prose was instead a description of a painting。 It fit the narrative like a glove。 A really beautiful and melancholy read。
